The Zoo of Basle, called by the Basle locals affectionately <Zolli>
has major plans for the future. It would like to build a giant
aquarium, a so-called <Oceanium> (underground sea world). The
visitors could there <immerge> into a world of the sea creatures,
plants and corals; in Japan such kind of aquariums are very popular.
The project for it was published this week by the director of the
zoo; the Zoo of Basle hasn't expanded on space since the year 1961.
For the construction project, a change of the zoning plan is
requested which has to be approved by the <City Council> (City
parliament). An <Oceanium> would attract two million visitors per
year from Switzerland and abroad to Basle. The construction cost
would amount to Swiss Francs 70 Mio. and should be financed by
privates. Similar sites, like the one planned in Basle, are very
far away inside Europe, in Lisbon, Barcelona, Genoa or Arnhem.

so-genanntes <Ozeanium> (Unterwasserwelt) bauen.
<Grosse Rat> (Stadtparlament) zustimmen muss.

No. 18. Unfortunately, we run out of time, so we couldn't visit the
famous bamboo craft shop here. While walking back to the car parking
on a natural sidewalk, I was a moment distracted and suddenly
stumbled and fell on the ground. Besides some slight skin grazing
and some blue-yellow spots which appeared some days later, I was
fortunately unharmed. Now, I realized why Japanese wear always and
everywhere white gloves when outdoors or when working. That's really
a very intelligent way of doing. Back home at the Ryokan in Myoko-
kogen, we had time for a relaxing bath and get ready for dinner. We
also learnt, that Japanese farmers exporting rice to abroad have
to newly (since two years) fill in a form by order of the Japanese
bureaucracy. In the past, such kind of administrative paperwork
wasn't requested. We just wondered whether it was a measure ordered
by Japanese bureaucrats on their own. To be continued (T.H.)

【 from Editor's Room / 編集後記 】
