Japan: Innovativ idea to save kerosene
Japan: Innovative Idee zum Treibstoff sparen (Thu. 15.10.2009 Smi)

The Japanese Airline Company All Nippon Airways (ANA) produced
attention with its unusual approach to save fuel. Since the
beginning of October their passengers are reminded with information
boards and asked to go once more to toilet before takeoff (Boarding).
If the passengers urinate once more before takeoff, then the overall
weight of the aircraft can be reduced accordingly. That measure
could lead to a monthly reduction of the CO2 output by 4.2 tons
over the whole fleet of aircrafts if only half of the passengers
would follow the direction. ANA intends to test the measure now for
one month.

Die japanische Fluggesellschaft All Nippon Airways (ANA) erweckt

City of Berne opened its new bear park
Stadt Bern eroeffnete neuen Baerenpark (Thu. 22.10.2009 Smi)

The City of Berne inaugurated the new <Bear Park> with a celebration
event for the people on October 25, 2009. The bear is the emblem and
the heraldic animal of the City of Berne; the city has a long
history together with the bear which dates back to the year of 1513.
In the past years, the bears used to live in the bears pit in the
center of the City. That accommodation was however not animal-
friendly, that's why a project for a new <Bear Park> was introduced
in the year 2001. The new <Bear Park> disposes of a surface of about
6,000 square-meters with a 100 meter long water basin; it is located
on a slope along the river Aare. The whole complex did cost 23,6 Mio.
Swiss Francs; the budget planned only cost of 14,5 Mio. Francs. The
major sponsor is the <Mobiliar-Insurance>; the female bear (Bjoerk)
and the male bear (Finn) took over their new home with great
pleasure. Bern Tourism intends to make the new <landmark> of the
City intensively know to the people; a <Bear Park> in the middle of
a City might be unique worldwide!

In frueheren Jahren lebten
Bern Tourismus will das neue

No. 01: This year's travelling brought us to the Japanese
prefectures of Nagano, Niigata, Yamagata and Fukushima. They have a
long and rich cultural history and their landscape is very beautiful
and mostly intact. Ahead of our arrival in Japan, we had to go
through new procedures at airports, such as the use of the
self-check-in-machine at Zurich airport by Swiss. The handling isn't
that complicated, but it takes some time to go through all the
requested inputs. So, in busy times, some waiting and patience is
needed. If you have your seats for the whole journey already
reserved/booked in advance, then it is easier as you can just
confirm the information, when it appears on the screen. There is
some human assistance staff nearby, but at that time, I saw only two
for the whole economy class check-in area. We only asked for help to
fix the luggage-tag at the suitcase, we were told that the staff at
the luggage counter would take care of the matter if asked.
Switzerland joined the <Schengen-Dublin-Agreement> and that led to
the abolishment of passport controls at Zurich airport for flights
within the <Schengen Area> since March 29, 2009. When proceeding to
the Departure area, a boarding pass check will be only applied,
however at the gate your passport and boarding pass will be check by
the staff of your airline. To be continued (T.H.)
