It's been quite a while, but I'd like to share the Results and various Thoughts on the June Popular Vote. Breakdown: 45.21% (YES) supported it, 54.79% (NO) opposed it. Swiss Cantons: 12 (YES), 14 (NO), Turnout of Voters 58.86% Initially, it was reported that the Initiative was in favor of Approval, but as the Voting Day approached, the Opposition made a last-minute Push and the Result was reversed. [ Viewpoint ] ■ The Tages-Anzeiger Newspaper reported on June 15, 2026, that the last-minute Shift in Opposition was "a Result of Votes from the Centrist-Parties FDP and Mitte leaning towards Opposition." At the same Time, the EU's Reaction was described as follows: "We understand that the Swiss People prioritized 'economic Rationality.' There was considerable Concern within the European Commission (EU) before the Vote. The Vote in favor of the Initiative could have jeopardized the Stability of Relations, even before the Adoption of Bilateral Agreement III with Switzerland. Many Swiss People value the Free Movement of Persons itself as a Right to live and work anywhere in Europe. 450,000 Swiss People already enjoy this Freedom and do not want to give it up. The Swiss People understand that 'their economic Future depends on Strengthening their Relationship with the EU.'" ■ Swiss Public Broadcaster SRF reported on May 7, 2026, the Funds spent on the Popular Vote Campaign. https://www.srf.ch/news/schweiz/keine-10-mio-schweiz-so-viel-geld-fliesst-in-die-abstimmungskampagnen The Battle surrounding the so-called "Sustainability Initiative," a Popular Initiative opposing Switzerland's Population of 10 Million, is heating up. The controversial Nature of this Initiative is clearly reflected in its Campaign Funding. To date, over 15 Million Swiss Francs have been raised. This is by far the highest Amount of Campaign Funding since the mandatory Disclosure of Information was implemented. (From early 2024, Campaign Funding exceeding 50,000 Swiss Francs has been required to be disclosed.) The Pro-Initiative side has raised 6.4 Million Swiss Francs, while the Anti-Initiative side has raised an even larger 8.9 Million Swiss Francs. Next, I'd like to introduce some interesting Comments from the various Analyses being reported in the Media. ■ "A calm Consideration of the 10 Million Initiative justifies supporting it," by Peter Kuster, Deputy Editor of the financial Online Newspaper Finews.ch (August 13, 2026). Although the "Sustainability Initiative" does not exactly set liberal Economists alight, a dispassionate Assessment suggests that it should be supported. This is because there are Signs that the recent Mass Influx of Immigrants is eroding the Foundations of our Country. In particular, Switzerland’s traditionally strong Capacity for Integration is reaching its Limits. Opponents of the Initiative completely ignore the real Imbalances and Inequalities that come with rapid "Population Growth." Per Capita Income has barely increased in recent Years. The Consequences of massive Migration, accompanied by virtually Free Movement of Persoms, at least within the EU, are visible in Schools, Hospitals, Transportation, Housing Markets, Prisons, and everywhere else. Politicians acknowledge that there is Pain in the Growth, at least locally, and promise to take immediate Action. However, Politicians in both the Executive and Legislative Branches have failed to decide on and implement effective Measures over the past several Decades. If we take the Issues associated with Immigration seriously, it is clear that this Initiative is by no means radical. Under the transitional Provisions, the Initiative leaves the Swiss Federal Government and Parliament with considerable Discretion in domestic and foreign Policy Matters when it comes to Implementation. Although the Termination of the Agreement with the EU on the Free Movement of Persons is, according to the Text of the Initiative, effectively a last Resort, it is by no means automatic. Far from being a Hindrance to Switzerland’s self-assured Diplomacy, this may even serve as a Trump Card in Negotiations. Just how sustainable is Switzerland, a Country without Borders? Regulating Immigration into one’s own Territory in the best Interests of its Citizens is one of the most fundamental Duties of a Nation State. Switzerland, an Island of Prosperity in Europe, acts as a Magnet, attracting People who, viewed individually, have made highly rational economic Decisions. As one Example of this, Switzerland has repeatedly succeeded in integrating Immigrant Groups into Society, or at the very least in achieving orderly Coexistence. This is a far superior Achievement to that of its two large Neighbours to the West and North, where such Efforts have led to political Turmoil. Even if the 10-Million-People Initiative were to be passed, it would not strengthen Switzerland’s Economy or its Status as a Financial Centre; however, it might help to prevent the gradual Erosion of the Foundations that characterise our Country and underpin our high Quality of Life, and the Loss of our Social Cohesion. Swiss Companies will continue to secure the Workforce they need. Only one in two Immigrants is actually in Employment, and only one in ten are highly Skilled Workers for whom there is high Demand. Despite this Initiative, there is a Potential for 40,000 People to migrate annually. Currently, 100,000 People migrate each Year. The Costs of Security, Social Welfare, Schools, Infrastructure, and Hospitals are skyrocketing. This is the economic Disadvantage of Immigration! While supporting good Relations with the EU, we oppose Colonial Treaties. Although it is understood that the final Decision-Making Power rests with the Swiss People, the Assertion that "the People can vote" is incorrect. EU-Law is international Law and takes Precedence over Swiss- Law. Regarding the Sustainability Initiative, the Swiss Federal Council (Government) and the Federal Parliament have capitulated to the EU. Today, even major EU-Companies are struggling to cope with the encroaching Regulations and are being forced to cut Staff. Swiss Rules are simpler and more practical. EU-Dependency Treaties will once again drastically increase Immigration! 690,000 Foreigners will suddenly gain Permanent Residency. They will be able to stay in Switzerland permanently, even if they never work again, are ineligible for Social Security, or commit Crimes. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) believes it is important to discuss and resolve these Immigration Issues, even if it suffers a Defeat. The Challenges associated with Population Growth will not disappear. Loss of Transportation, Housing, Labor Markets, Infrastructure, Energy Supply, and arable Land are Concerns for the Public. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) will continue to work to ensure that Switzerland can control its own Immigration Policy. ■ Thomas Matter, a Member of the Swiss National Assembly and Leader of the Initiative, published an urgent Advertisement in a major Newspaper titled "An Open Letter to Undecided Voters," expressing his Concerns on June 10th, just before the Election. The Gist of the Advertisement listed some fairly well-known Facts, such as: "The Opposition is pouring Millions of Swiss Francs into a fear- mongering Campaign", "Justice Minister Beat Jans (SP) said, 'If approved, Basel University Hospital will have to be closed today or tomorrow. Swiss Federal President Guy Parmelin (SVP) opposes this", "The Opposition claims that Immigrants contribute to our Old-Age Pension (AHV) Funds", "National Assembly Member Jacqueline Badran (SP) says that Immigrants have no Impact on rental" and so on, in a desperate Appeal. ■ The Magazine "Die Weltwoche" published an Article titled "Reprimands and Lies," which examined the Words and Actions of Swiss Justice Minister Beat Jans. https://weltwoche.ch/story/ruege-und-luege/ Ahead of the Referendum (Vote), Swiss Justice Minister Beat Jans brought external Representatives from Businesses and Labor Unions to a Press Conference opposing the Initiative. This was not recommended in the Guidelines, but he ignored them. According to Information obtained by the "Weltwoche Magazine" from the Federal Government, Swiss Federal President Guy Parmelin did indeed refer to the Federal Council's Public Relations Guidelines and urged Government Ministers to maintain Objectivity and Balance when the Referendum Campaign entered its heated Phase. However, he did not mention Justice Minister Beat Jans by name. Beat Jans was a Federal Council Member in charge of the Vote. Moreover, his radical and inflammatory Remarks had been controversial for Weeks already, so it was "obvious" to everyone present who Swiss President Guy Parmelin was referring to", according to the Source.
