The Popular Initiative "No 10-Million Switzerland! (Sustainability Initiative)" / Volksinitiative "Keine 10-Millionen-Schweiz! (Nachhaltigkeitsinitiative)" https://www.admin.ch/en/sustainability-initiative ■ According to the Government's Summary, as of the End of 2025, approximately 9.1 Million People resided in Switzerland. Since the Introduction of the Free Movement of Persons in 2002, the Population has increased by approximately 1.7 Million, primarily as a Result of Immigration. Explanation regarding "No to a Switzerland with 10 Million! (Sustainability Initiative)": The resident Population is to be kept below 10 Million by 2050. If the permanent resident Population exceeds 9.5 Million by 2050, the Federal Council (Government) and Parliament will need to take Measures, particularly regarding the Admission of Refugees and Family Reunification. The Federal Council (Government) will need to invoke or negotiate Exemptions or Safeguard Clauses in international Agreements that contribute to Population Growth. If the Population exceeds 10 Million, Switzerland must terminate these Agreements, and two Years later, it must also terminate the Agreement with the EU on the Free Movement of Persons. Consequently, other Treaties under the first Round of Bilateral Agreements will also become invalid. Furthermore, Switzerland's Participation in the EU's Schengen Agreement and the Dublin Agreement will be called into question, jeopardizing close Cooperation in the Areas of Security and Refugee Policy. Federal Council (Government) and Parliament recommend a "NO": This Popular Initiative would create Uncertainty and threaten Switzerland’s Stability. It would have a negative Impact on the Economy, jeopardize Prosperity and domestic Security, and impose significant financial Burdens on the Federal State and the Cantons. Furthermore, it would undermine the Framework for Bilateral Cooperation with the EU and Switzerland’s humanitarian Traditions. Parliamentary Verdict: National Council (Nationalrat): 123 Votes against (NO), 67 Votes in favor (YES), and 6 Abstentions. Council of States (Staenderat): 30 Votes against (NO), 9 Votes in favor (YES), and 5 Abstentions. The Popular Initiative Committee recommends a "YES". https://nachhaltigkeitsinitiative.ch/initiative/ The current Level of Immigration is significantly too high, resulting in Housing Shortages, soaring Rents, Urban Sprawl, Traffic Congestion and Overcrowded Trains, rising Crime, a strained Healthcare System, and declining Educational Standards. This Initiative aims to limit Immigration to a reasonable Level. In addition to the Government's Explanation mentioned above, the Initiative Committee of the Swiss People's Party (SVP), states at the Initiative Committee's Website: https://www.svp.ch/ "The Federal Government and the Cantons must ensure sustainable demographic Development in order to protect the Environment and maintain the Functioning of Infrastructure, Healthcare, Educational Institutions, the Power Supply, and the Social Security System. The resident Population includes all Swiss Citizens with their primary Residence in Switzerland, as well as all Foreigners who hold a Residence Permit valid for 12 Months or more, or who have resided in Switzerland for 12 Months or more." ■ Viewpoint: Debate over the Popular (Citizens') Initiative to cap the Population at 10 Million is heating up, with a wide Range of Opinions being voiced. The May 20, 2026, issue of "Weltwoche" reported on a nostalgic Story titled "Philipp Mueller and 'Switzerland of 8 Million.'" https://weltwoche.ch/story/philipp-mueller-und-die-8-millionen-schweiz/ Philipp Mueller, a leading Advocate for Immigration Restrictions and former President of the "FDP.TheLiberals" (FDP), attempted in 2003 to cap the Proportion of Foreigners at 18%. In May 2009, Mueller again declared that the Immigration Quota had been reached and called for setting a Population Cap of 8 Million, but he immediately withdrew that Claim. On July 2, 2010, Bastien Girod, a former Member of the National Council (Nationalrat) for the Green Party, contributed a now-legendary Statement to the Newspaper "Blick" stating, "It is not only the right Wing that does not want a Switzerland with a Population of over 10 Million." In other words, even the left did not want 10 Million People, yet now all National Political Parties except the SVP and EDU are opposing the Initiative! (How else can we describe this Phenomenon other than a Betrayal by the Left?) Furthermore, in its May 27, 2026, Issue, "Weltwoche" published an Article by Thomas Matter, an Entrepreneur, Member of the National Council (Nationalrat) for the Swiss People's Party (SVP), and Initiator of the "No to a Switzerland with 10 Million! Initiative", with the Title "Yesterday a Warning, Today It Doesn't Matter", "In 2012, 8 Million Residents were too many for left-wing Politicians. Today, it seems even 10 Million is no Problem." Apparently, Switzerland's Population has now reached 9.15 Million. https://weltwoche.ch/story/gestern-alarm-heute-egal/ As a representative Commentary, let me introduce an Overview of the Article "The Big Lie of the Skilled Labor Shortage" from "Inside Paradeplatz" dated May 11, 2026. https://insideparadeplatz.ch/2026/05/11/die-grosse-fachkraefte-luege/ The established Powers in Swiss Politics and Business are still trying to overturn the Policy regarding the 10-Million-People Cap. Their Pretext is a "Shortage of skilled Workers." However, the Reality is that in many Companies and Industries, Foreigners have long since taken the Reins. They are climbing the Corporate Ladder and deciding who will be promoted in the Future. Meanwhile, long-time local Residents are becoming the Losers, and there are increasing Cases where they are forced into early Retirement. UBS is setting an Example by trying to force early Retirement on older Employees. For the Bank, this means Cost Savings, and those affected have almost no Choice. (SRFnews: Although UBS posted a Profit of USD 7.8 Billion in 2025, Job Cuts are continuing.) https://www.srf.ch/news/wirtschaft/weiterer-abbau-geplant-ubs-und-cs-streichen-mehr-als-36-000-arbeitsplaetze-in-drei-jahren At University Hospitals, Standard German has long been the Working Language. The "Angels in White" in Zurich come from the far North (Germany). The Situation is similar at Educational Institutions such as ETH and the University of Zurich. Germans are gaining an increasingly strong Voice. In effect, they have seized Control. The Swiss who reign over them are merely maintaining the Appearance of "Switzerland First." The real Beneficiaries are, above all, the Companies, which can freely and endlessly select the "Best Talents" or the "most cost-effective Talents" or both from the EU's Talents Pool of 300 Million People. The Trend toward supporting the 10-Million Cap is nothing more than the Result of many older People losing Opportunities in the Labor Market. It is not that older Swiss People are less capable than Immigrants as Skilled Workers or Office Staff. Those who benefit most from the unrestricted Influx of Immigrants are the Ones perpetuating this Myth: namely, Corporations and the Social Democratic Party (SP). The SP controls the rapidly expanding administrative Apparatus tasked with "Managing" the ever-growing Population. Newspaper "Tages-Anzeiger" dated May 16, 2026: https://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/10-millionen-initiative-warum-die-wirtschaft-ihre-macht-verliert-617587503182 With a Majority Vote in favor expected, Political Geographer Michael Hermann published the following Analysis: "The Business Community is angering the Generation aged 55 and older the very Generation on which it depends politically. The Interests of the Older Generation who are well-organized, sure to vote, and unwilling to compromise are at stake. They will not bow to the Business Community's Threats in this Referendum Battle." (Paid Article) Support by the FDP rose slightly from 43% in the May 9 Report, while support by the Center Party (Mitte) fell from 36% to just over 33%.
